You only need to float the thought of ‘best films to watch when high’ to google and it comes up with a list so stereotypical it could be termed as ‘definitive’, with stoner staples such as Half Baked and Friday as well as oddities like Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas followed up by the kind of film that you can’t really enjoy without your senses dulled (Ted). However, I disagree with this, as being stoned is generally not a one-time thing, therefore, most stoners will have already seen most of the films on the list. Therefore I will attempt to serve up a few more suggestions that may fall in line with your stoned sense of interest.

Where The Buffalo Roam

Great alternative to Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, and in my mind superior due not only to the fact Hunter. S. Thompson himself served as a consultant but also because it combines elements of a number of Thompson’s works and generally gives a complete picture of the man. Also, this film has Bill Murray in the lead role which is always a plus. Murray portrays mayhem and debauchery in the way that can be expected from a film about Hunter.S.Thompson but trades in the kind of trippy scenes which take prominence in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas for hilarious but self-destructive scenes from Murray as Thompson.

Mad Max 2

A brilliantly bizarre sequel to what, in my opinion, was a relatively boring film. This film includes some of the best aspects of the first film, for example, pre-xenophobia Mel Gibson, and places them into a post-apocalyptic wasteland. The bizarre outfits and dialogue should provide some great entertainment when stoned.

Batman Returns

In my opinion, this is Tim Burton’s ‘Citizen Kane’ due to its brilliant set designs and fun and entertaining story that encapsulates a lot of great aspects of the Dark Knight while sidestepping the bleak nature of the current Batman film franchise. Also if you’re so stoned that you can’t even follow a film’s plot, you can just stare at Michelle Pfeiffer’s portrayal of Catwoman (this applies to male and female) as she tears across the screen in a display of manic fury and nigh unbearable levels of sensuality.
