They are not necessarily two forces that need to be pitched against one another, right? I mean they are not mutually exclusively in any traditional sense, if at all. Get stoned. Watch some porn. Have sex (and if you can’t, resort to watching some porn?) Sex and drugs - or variations upon the theme - are all just similar notes in a familiar melody. So then why am I pitting them against one another in a death match?

Well, in short, the death match is taking place in a lunch break where, hypothetically, you only have time to do one (assuming you might also want a coffee and a sandwich. For the sake of the debate, I ask you to imagine this death match is taking place in a world where marijuana is as legal as say, cigarettes.

You’ve had a hard morning at work and you have time to do just one thing; have a spliff or watch some porn. My question is, which effects your ability to work the most?

Now, the reason I’m thinking about this is that Italian Courts have recently come down in favour of porn. The issue came up recently after two workers at Fiat both protested their dismissals; one for watching porn and one for smoking marijuana. The Italian Courts decided that only the man watching porn was wrongly dismissed, and that doing so during your lunch break should be legal.

In truth, I’m not really sure where I’m going with this. I can’t imagine what was so stimulating on the car assembly line that the first man felt the need to have an afternoon wank, but the court decided that the effects of the porn finished the moment that, well, he did. The effects of the marijuana outlasted the half hour lunch break. It is a wonderful little microcosm of Italian politics that such a debate has even arose (can’t work out good “aroused" pun, but there must be one!)

When I started writing this, I didn’t really know where I was going. I figured I was gonna slip into some profound pontification of the effects of sex and drugs on the mind, body and soul. Instead, I’m gonna conclude with a classic “would you rather,” as that’s basically more interesting.

Would you rather give up sex or weed? The lunch-time debate is simply a platform for this bigger question.
