‘You can’t beat the bookies’ they always say. If that’s true, then you’ll be very happy to hear than Ladbrokes have put 3/1 odds on cannabis becoming ‘legalised and regulated in the UK by 2026. That means that if you put a pound on cannabis being legalised by 2026, if you won you’ll be earning 3 pounds back, plus your original bet.
Ladbrokes are using the Canadian legalisation method touted by their prime minister Justin Trudeau as their mechanism for deciding what ‘legalisation’ actually is. As more and more states in the US legalise, and entire nations look towards drug legalisation as the way forward, it’s unsurprising that bookmakers in the UK are starting to look at the probabilities of cannabis becoming regulated.
It’s not unusual for bookmakers like ladbrokes to declare the odds of a political outcomes, and they’re often pretty close to the truth. In the 2015 election, one of the only people to predict the outcome of the election correctly were bookmakers, making us wonder whether they really do know something we don’t, as the election outcome was very different than that predicted by any polling.
Other political points you can bet on at the moment include: The next leaders of UKIP, Conservatives and Liberal Democrats, The EU referendum result and the next President of the United States.
So, if you fancy your chances, it might well be worth putting a bet on for legalisation for by 2026. I will be, mostly because if we're not there by then, we're going to be feeling pretty sorry for ourselves anyway.
