Tories slam Lib Dems' call for cannabis cafes

CAFES for pot smokers could be legalised under secret Lib Dem plans, it emerged yesterday. A leaked policy document from Nick Clegg’s party calls for the decriminalisation of the possession of cannabis, “social supply” of the drug to adults and cultivation of plants for personal use.

The document follows an internal party vote that commits the Lib Dems to making it “no longer a crime for the occupier or manager of premises to permit someone to use cannabis on those premises”.

The party’s constitution binds its leaders – if they win power – to implement votes carried at annual conferences.

The Tories, who unearthed the document, said the policy would go further than the Amsterdam model of turning a blind eye to “cannabis coffee shops”. Cafe owners could allow customers to smoke the drug outside or buy “hash brownies” and vaporised cannabis.

Tory Shadow Home Secretary Chris Grayling said: “Lib Dem policy on drugs is deeply worrying. It’s quite clear they want to be soft on crime and to sign up to more and more powers from Brussels. I have spoken to countless people whose lives have been wrecked by hard drugs.”

Nick Clegg has also come under fire for suggesting that heroin and other drugs should made legally available.

The Lib Dem leader claimed that criminalising drug use was restricting “individual freedom and civil liberties” – and argued that drug offences should not lead to jail.

While serving as an MEP, he complained it was unfair that drug users were being pushed to the fringes of society. He said heroin should be made available to addicts under medical supervision.

He signed a motion calling on EU states “to take measures to make the fight against organised crime and trafficking in narcotics and psychotropic substances more effective by establishing a system of legal control and regulation of production, sale and use of currently illegal substances”.

Last night a Lib Dem spokesman said: “We will always base drugs policy on the independent scientific advice of experts.”

  • Legalise cannabis and over 55% of smokers wont go on to hard drugs as they wont need to mix with “drug dealers” to get their smoke therefor not being exposed to harder drugs. Also cannabis would be alot cleaner and better you dont need something"stronger". All this has a knockon affect on crime as a hole due to the assaults and robberies, thefts, murders etc. that are all caused through the lifestyle drug abuse brings. If u can sit casualy at a cafe with a friend having a joint, or a bong, legally, rather than siting up a smelly dirty close hiding from the law, amongst people taking smack, theres far less chance of going down that road.
And why not criminalise alcohol? That is responsible for hundreds of thousands of deaths worldwide each day, not to mention the crime that gets commited. Add to the fact that cannabis is a natural plant, alcohal is poison made by man.
Honestly wheres the logic in our law?
My points dont even mention the money the government would rake in!! Its something to think about.

  • At last, a genuine reason to vote….in theory anyway. In the past ive passed up my right to vote for the simple reason that i wont give it to any party that promises the earth but renaigs on that promise as soon as there fat arses are firmly sitting in number 10 downing street laughing at us mugs for taking there lies. If lib dem do get in and they do decriminalise cannabis use then i know what box ill be putting my X in. Saying that, i doubt very much that we will see that happening in my lifetime going on the minority that actualy appreciate the logic behind such a policy. As a reformed drug addict who lost a brother to heroin, theres no way anyone can have the right to label me a criminal just because i grow and use a small amount of a drug that keeps me in the frame of mind to never again poison my body and mind with hard drugs. It dosnt make any sense to make nature aganst the law anyway. Thriughout history, all walks of life have sought to find ways of relaxing after a hard days work, back to when we were hunting and gathering. No amount of lies and scare tactics will stop us from our right to free thought and expression.

  • well sorry but i totaly agree with the lib dems an i dont even vote for them but bloody well may now.the millions we waste on imprisoning ppl for taking or supplying drugs is criminal plus also the billions spent on catching users and suppliers is equally disturbing think of the tax and money that could be ploughed into society through cannabis cafes, let alone all saved by not arresting users, plus imprisoning them.plus if all drugs were legal and avaliable for addicts only there wouldnt be any criminals to watch or arrest for supplying,as they would all be ougt of business an some of profits could be used to get addicts clean with detox5 or something else that most smack addicts cant afford to do.and wether cafes and all drugs are leglislated u will have lives wrecked by HARD DRUGS but our country is in financial turmoil and this is the way forward.personal choice is personal not govermental and then at least the funds would bev there to give the help they really need and never get.the old addige that a smack head has to suffer dureing withdrall is ancient and rubbish hence why most of them stay on it for life.
