British musician Sting has angered anti-drug groups by adding his name to the campaign to legalise marijuana in America. As politicians in many states, including California, consider legalising pot, celebrities have come out in support of the suggested legislation and Sting wants America to spend the money it uses in the war on the drug, on poverty and environmental issues instead, reported aceshowbiz.com "The war on drugs has failed but it's worse than that. It is actively harming our society. People who genuinely need help can't get it. Neither can people who need medical marijuana to treat terrible diseases,” he said. Sting is calling on fans to support activists at the Drug Policy Alliance (DPA) that campaign for those jailed for no violent drug offenses to be released from prison. But his comments have upset anti-drug activists. "Sting should stick to singing and not meddle in matters he doesn't understand. We do not need pop stars coming out and making irresponsible statements like that,” said a spokesperson for DARE, which teaches schoolchildren about the dangers of drug use. http://www.dnaindia.com/entertainment/report_sting-angers-anti-drug-activists...

@samson-I completely agree. I can understand how drugs such as meth and heroin are illegal, but the government is helping no one and in fact causing more damage by not telling the truth about marijuana. It’s so absurd that more people don’t realize this(no ones ever died from smoking weed, ever), but I predict that within about 15 years weed will be legal in most states, maybe even along with some of of the other organic psychedelics like ’shrooms and peyote.
So what does this DARE spokesperson base that statement on? That Sting is meddling in something that he doesn’t understand? What makes him not understand it? I think that this spokesperson is just upset because more and more people are realizing how dangerous marijuana ISN’T and how beneficial it IS. I’m sure DARE will lose a lot of it’s funding if marijuana were to be legalized, and they don’t want to lose that money. They spread propaganda about it all to kids to brainwash them into thinking that pot is evil and anyone who uses it is a criminal.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m sure DARE does it’s fair share of good things for students when it comes to ACTUAL drugs (heroin, cocaine, meth, etc.), but they really need to lay off the scare tactics. It’s sad.
