A CARER has been spared prison after he grew a lifetime’s supply of cannabis at home as a pain reliever for his disabled wife and to sell.
Judge Michael Stokes, QC, told Kenneth King he was giving him a 12-month sentence, suspended for two years, as an “act of mercy”.
He accepted 35-year-old King provides 24-hour care for his wife, who has a brain injury.
“There are, I accept, circumstances in your life which are not present in the vast majority of those who commit these offences,” he said.
“An immediate prison sentence on you would, I accept, have very serious adverse consequences on your wife and daughter. As an act of mercy, I impose a suspended sentence.”
Nottingham Crown Court heard police found five kilograms of high-strength “skunk” cannabis and just under three kilograms of leaf, valued at up £84,000, at King’s home.
There were weighing scales, re-sealable bags and £2,000 cash in a chest of drawers.
Officers also searched North Farm, Fledborough, near Newark, the home of King’s sub-tenant, Christopher Burgess, 42. The house is about a mile away from King’s Hall Farm Cottage, in Main Street, Ragnall, Newark.
Both men pleaded guilty to producing cannabis and possession of the drug with intent to supply.
Burgess’s crop was on a smaller scale. The judge gave him a six-month sentence, suspended for one year, and ordered him to attend the probation service’s Think First programme.
